Masilabune was named by Tobien (1980). It is not extant. Its type is Masillabune martini.

It was corrected as Masillabune by Hooker (1986) and Erfurt and Metais (2007).

It was assigned to Haplobunodontidae by Hooker (1986), Carroll (1988) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Choeropotamidae by Sudre and Lecomte (2000) and Erfurt and Metais (2007).
