Canis lagopus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Vulpes lagopus by Boule and De Villeneuve (1927) and Crile and Quiring (1940); it was recombined as Alopex lagopus by Thomas (1911), Kurten (1968) and Kurten and Anderson (1980).
