Murchisonia was named by d'Archiac and de Verneuil (1841) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-l P Dora Sepkoski's reference number: 1130,1197]. Its type is Turritella bilineata. It is the type genus of Murchisoniidae, Murchisoniacea.

It was reranked as Holopella (Murchisonia) by Murchison (1854); it was reranked as Pleurotomaria (Murchisonia) by Hall (1856); it was reranked as Bembexia (Murchisonia) by Lawson (1955).

It was assigned to Holopella by Murchison (1854); to Pleurotomaria by Hall (1856); to Bembexia by Lawson (1955); to Archaeogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Murchisoniidae by Knight et al. (1960), Bouchet et al. (2005) and Wagner (2017).
