Rhombopora was named by Meek (1872). Its type is Rhombopora lepidodendroides. It is the type genus of Rhomboporidae.
It was assigned to Rhabdomesontidae by Bassler (1911); to Rhomboporidae by Ernst (2000); and to Cryptostomata by Sepkoski (2002).
