Amebelodon was named by Barbour (1927). It is not extant.
It was assigned to Amebelodontina by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Gomphotheriidae by Barbour (1927), Carroll (1988), Lambert (1990), Lambert and Shoshani (1998) and Geraads et al. (2005); and to Amebelodontinae by Shoshani and Tassy (1996), Shoshani and Tassy (2005), Sanders et al. (2010) and Wang et al. (2017).
