Taxonomy
Murex sacellum was named by Chemntiz (1788) [DISTRIBUTION: Oligocene-Recent; Indo-Pacific.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Purpura sacellum by Reeve (1846); it was recombined as Cymia sacellum by Vredenburg (1925).
