Murex pungens was named by Solander in Brander and Brander (1766) [DISTRIBUTION: Eocene; western Europe.]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Typhis pungens by Defrance (1825); it was recombined as Typhis (Typhis) pungens by Gertman (1969) and Merle (1986); it was recombined as Hirotyphis pungens by Schnetler et al. (2024).
