Ectenonotus was named by Raymond (1920) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u O Llvi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 795].

It was assigned to Cybelidae by Holliday (1942); to Cybelopsinae by Fortey (1979); to Pliomeridae by Fortey and Droser (1999) and Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Phacopida by Sepkoski (2002).
