Reptilia - Compsemydidae

Taxonomy
Peltochelys duchastelii was named by Dollo (1885). Its type specimen is IRSNB Ct. R. 16 (also numbered 1543) [lectotype], a shell (a complete but flattened carapace and plastron), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sainte-Barbe coal mine, Bernissart, which is in a Barremian/Aptian lacustrine - small claystone/bituminous coal in the Sainte-Barbe Clays Formation of Belgium.

It was corrected as Peltochelys duchastelli by Dollo (1884) and Danilov and Parham (2008); it was synonymized subjectively with Tretosternum bakewelli by Lydekker and Boulenger (1887) and Lydekker (1889); it was synonymized subjectively with Tretosternum punctatum by Delair (1958).

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
W. G. Joyce and Y. Rollot 2020Peltochelys duchastelii can be diagnosed as a representative of Compsemydidae, a clade of paracryptodires, by the presence of a finely textured shell, a sutured bridge, and a sinuous plastral midline sulcus; absence of a contact between peripheral 1 and costal 1; and the withdrawal of the nuchal from the anterior margin of the shell resulting from a midline contact of peripherals 1. Within Compsemydidae, Peltochelys duchastelii is most readily diagnosed by a clear contact of costal 8 with peripheral 11 (likely absent in Riodevemys inumbragigas), a point contact of vertebral 1 with marginal 3 (absent in all others), the absence of mesoplastra (present in all others), a shallow xiphiplastral notch (deep in Toremys cassiopeia and Compsemys spp.), and the presence of a single gular (likely double in all others).
