Taxonomy
Mesasimulium laihaigouense was named by Zhang (1986). Its type specimen is Shandong Museum Z81014, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Lahaigou, Luanping County (Shandong Prov. Mus. collection), which is in a Hauterivian lacustrine mudstone in the Dabeigou Formation of China. It is the type species of Mesasimulium.
