Melania cuvieri was named by Deshayes (1825).

It was recombined as Cerithium cuvieri by d'Orbigny (1850); it was recombined as Pirena cuvieri by Bayan (1870); it was recombined as Faunus (Melanatria) cuvieri by Fischer (1885); it was recombined as Melanatria cuvieri by Oppenheim (1901); it was recombined as Jponsia cuvieri by Pacaud and Harzhauser (2012).
