Saurorhynchus was named by Reis (1892) [Sepkoski's age data: J Sine J Toar Sepkoski's reference number: 452,1066].

It was assigned to Saurichthyiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Saurichthyidae by Gardiner (1960), Kogan (2016) and Maxwell and Stumpf (2017).
