It was reranked as the family Homalopsidae by Cope (1871) and Cope (1875); it was reranked as the tribe Homalopsinae by Perrier (1928).

It was assigned to Colubroidea by Cope (1871) and Cope (1875); to Opisthoglypha by Perrier (1928); and to Colubridae by Kuhn (1966).
