Gephyrosauridae was named by Evans (1980). It is not extant.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Rhynchocephalia by Fraser and Sues (1994).

It was assigned to Eosuchia by Evans (1980); to Lepidosauria by Benton (1985); to Sphenodonta by Carroll (1988); and to Rhynchocephalia by Jones et al. (2013).
