Taxonomy
Palaeovaranus was named by Zittel (1887). Its type is Palaeovaranus cayluxi.

It was synonymized subjectively with Necrosaurus by McDowell and Bogert (1954) and Kuhn (1966).

It was assigned to Palaeovaranidae by Georgalis et al. (2021) and Smith and Habersetzer (2021).
