Taxonomy
Trophon perelegans was named by Nomland (1917). Its type specimen is UCMP 11321, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is near Graham oil well, which is in a Miocene marine sandstone in the Santa Margarita Formation of California.
