Taxonomy
Platybelodon was named by Borissiak (1928). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Wang et al. (2017).
It was assigned to Amebelodontina by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Gomphotheriidae by Borissiak (1928), Carroll (1988) and Lambert and Shoshani (1998); to Amebelodontinae by Shoshani and Tassy (1996), Shoshani and Tassy (2005), Sanders et al. (2010) and Wang et al. (2013); and to Platybelodontinae by Wang et al. (2017).
It was assigned to Amebelodontina by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Gomphotheriidae by Borissiak (1928), Carroll (1988) and Lambert and Shoshani (1998); to Amebelodontinae by Shoshani and Tassy (1996), Shoshani and Tassy (2005), Sanders et al.
