Taxonomy
Cephalophytarion variabile was named by Schopf and Blacic (1971). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Harvard Univ. 58583, TBS-22-4-F, coordinates 28.3/108.0 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ellery Creek, which is in a Tonian peritidal chert in the Bitter Springs Formation of Australia.
