Pseudocybele lemurei was named by Hintze (1953) [Paratypes: 26457-60 (AMNH).]. Its type specimen is 26461 (AMNH), a cephalon/head (cranidium), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Lemureops lemurei by McAdams and Adrain (2009).
