Carbosesostris was named by Schram (1979) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1041]. Its type is Carbosesostris megaliphagon.

It was assigned to Goniadidae by Schram (1979); and to Phyllodocemorpha by Sepkoski (2002).
