Lepidochelys was named by Fitzinger (1843). It is extant. Its type is Chelonia olivacea.
It was assigned to Cheloniinae by Weems (1988); to Chelonidae by Dodd and Morgan (1992); to Carettinae by Kuhn (1966), van Dijk et al. (2014) and Rhodin et al. (2017); and to Cheloniidae by Hirayama (1995), Frank and Ramus (1996), Zug (2001) and Weems (2023).
