Fusus patagonicus was named by Sowerby (1846) [DISTRIBUTION: Oligocene-Miocene; Chile, Argentina.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Trophon (Trophonopsis) patagonicus by Cossmann (1903); it was recombined as Trophon patagonicus by Ortmann (1902), Ihering (1907), Ihering (1907), Carcelles (1946), Chiesa et al. (1995) and Frassinetti and Covacevich (1999).
