Polrussia was named by Borsuk-Bialynicka and Alifanov (1991). Its type is Polrussia mongoliensis.
It was assigned to Phrynosomatidae by Alifanov (2000); to Iguanidae by Alifanov (1993) and Gao and Norell (2000); to Iguania by Borsuk-Bialynicka and Alifanov (1991) and Conrad et al. (2007); to Pleurodonta by Conrad and Norell (2007); and to Iguanomorpha by DeMar et al. (2017).
