Alopex praeglacialis was named by Kormos (1932). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Villany locality 3, which is in the Villanyian of horizon Hungary.

It was recombined as Vulpes praeglacialis by Bonifay (1971), Wang et al. (2008) and Koufos (2022).
