Symphypoda was named by Cope (1867). It is not extant.

It was reranked as the suborder Symphypoda by Cope (1870), Cope (1871), Cope (1875), Seeley (1879) and Osborn (1904); it was synonymized subjectively with Theropoda by Zittel (1890); it was synonymized subjectively with Coelurosauria by Matthew (1915); it was synonymized subjectively with Coeluridae by Steel (1970).

It was assigned to Dinosauria by Cope (1867), Cope (1870), Cope (1871), Cope (1875) and Seeley (1879); and to Theropoda by Osborn (1904).
