Lophiomyidae was named by Gill (1872). It is extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Muridae by McKenna and Bell (1997); it was reranked as the subfamily Lophiomyinae by Steppan et al. (2004).
It was assigned to Simplicidentata by Flower (1883) and Flower and Lydekker (1891); and to Muroidea by Steppan et al. (2004).
