Balaena mysticetoides was named by Emmons (1858) [No type locality information is given other than Miocene of North Carolina. No type specimen number is listed.]. It is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Eschrichtius mysticetoides by Emmons (1858) and Cope (1870); it was recombined as Cetotherium mysticetoides by Trouessart (1898), Hay (1902) and Trouessart (1904); it was recombined as Megaptera mysticetoides by Hay (1930); it was considered a nomen dubium by Barnes and McLeod (1984) and Uhen et al. (2008).
