Tropicolpus was named by Marwick (1931) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m T Mi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 728].

It was assigned to Turritellidae by Beu et al. (1990); to Turritellinae by Titova (1994) and Allmon (1996); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
