Buccinofusus was named by Conrad (1868) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u R]. It is extant. Its type is Tritonium diegoensis.

It was reranked as Fusus (Buccinofusus) by Arnold (1908).

It was assigned to Fusus by Arnold (1908); to Buccinidae by Martin (1904) and Turner (1938); to Fasciolariidae by Abbass (1967) and Petuch (1988); to Fusininae by Ward (1992); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
