Pteropurpura was named by Josseaume (1880) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1267]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Murex (Pteropurpura) by Dall (1892), Harris and Palmer (1947) and Dey (1961); it was reranked as Purpura (Pteropurpura) by Mansfield (1937).

It was assigned to Purpura by Mansfield (1937); to Murex by Dall (1892), Harris and Palmer (1947) and Dey (1961); to Muricidae by Gardner (1947) and Todd (2001); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
