Taxonomy
Ostracites gryphoides was named by Schlotheim (1813) [DISTRIBUTION: Middle Miocene; Mediterranean, Iran.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Ostrea (Crassostrea) gryphoides by Cox (1936); it was recombined as Ostrea gryphoides by Azzaroli (1958); it was recombined as Crassostrea gryphoides by El-Hedeny (2005).
