Ellipsoidella was named by Heron-Allen and Earland (1910) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-l K Turo Sepkoski's reference number: 959]. It was considered unknown by Hayward et al. (2012).

It was assigned to Foraminiferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ellipsoidinidae by Hayward et al. (2012).
