Diatrymae was named by Matthew and Granger (1917).

It was corrected as Diatrymiformes by Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1960), Carroll (1988) and Livezey and Zusi (2007).

It was assigned to Euornithes by Matthew and Granger (1917); to Neognathae by Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1960) and Carroll (1988); and to Galloanserimorphae by Livezey and Zusi (2007).
