Kuwajimasauropus was named by Azuma and Takeyama (1991). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Kuwajimasauropus shiraminensis.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Tsukiji et al. (2019).

It was assigned to Theropoda by Azuma and Takeyama (1991); to Ornithopoda by Romero Molina et al. (2003); and to Theropoda by Fujita (2008).

Y. Azuma and K.-i. Takeyama 1991A new ichnogenus Kuwajimasauropus is monotypic at present, bipedal with tridactyl imprint, lacking digits I and V, mesaxonic foot structure. Digit III is longest. Digit II, III and IV splayed out in roughly symmetrical pattern. The footprint is V-shaped, longer than wide. The divarication of digits II-IV is near 70° and interdigital angles II-III and III-IV are roughly equal.
