Taxonomy
Pondaungini was named by Ciochon and Holroyd (1994). It is not extant.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Amphipithecidae by Shigehara et al. (2002); it was reranked as the subfamily Pondaunginae by Gunnell et al. (2002).

It was assigned to Notharctinae by Ciochon and Holroyd (1994); and to Notharctidae by Gunnell et al. (2002).
