Taxonomy
Oxyodon britannicus was named by von Huene (1908). Its type specimen is GSM 22893 and 22894 (part and counterpart), a maxilla, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Kenilworth, which is in an Asselian fluvial siliciclastic in the Kenilworth Sandstone Formation of the United Kingdom. It is the type species of Oxyodon.

It was recombined as Sphenacodon britannicus by Paton (1974) and Reisz (1986).
