Karamaites was named by Sokolov (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u K Ceno-u; Sokolov in Casey, 1965].

It was reranked as Placenticeras (Karamaites) by Cobban et al. (1989).

It was assigned to Placenticeras by Cobban et al. (1989); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Placenticeratidae by Roy and Bardhan (2020).
