Conodectes was named by Cope (1896). It is not extant. Its type is Conodectes favosus. It is the type genus of Conodectidae.
It was synonymized subjectively with Seymouria by Williston (1911) and Case (1911).
It was assigned to Otocoelidae by Cope (1896) and Hay (1902); to Seymouridae by Sushkin (1926); and to Conodectidae by Hay (1930).
