Taxonomy
Protropites was named by Arthaber (1911) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Protropites hilmi.

It was assigned to Tropitidae by Smith (1927); to Columbitidae by Tozer (1981); to Ceratitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Paranannitidae by Spath (1934), Kummel (1969) and Brayard et al. (2009).
