Plesiacanthoceratoides was named by Kennedy (1990) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-m K Ceno-u Sepkoski's reference number: 901]. Its type is Plesiacanthoceratoides vetula.

It was assigned to Acanthoceratinae by Kennedy and Cobban (1990) and Wright et al. (1996).
