Taxonomy

Rhamphocephalus was named by Seeley (1880). It is not extant.

It was considered a nomen dubium by O'Sullivan and Martill (2018).

It was assigned to Rhamphorhynchidae by Zittel (1890), Spangenberg (1898) and Van Den Broeck (1900); to Pterosauria by Unwin (1996); and to Rhamphorhynchinae by Unwin (2003).

Synonyms

Rhamphocephalus prestwichi was named by Seeley (1880). Its type specimen is OUM J28266, a partial skull (Skull roof), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Kineton Thorns Quarry, which is in a Bathonian offshore shelf slate in the Cotswold Slate Formation of the United Kingdom.

It was considered a nomen dubium by O'Sullivan and Martill (2018).
Dolichorhamphus was named by Seeley (1885).

It was synonymized subjectively with Rhamphocephalus by Zittel (1890).
