Stigmaria was named by Brongniart (1822). It is not extant. Its type is Stigmaria ficoides.

It was assigned to Lycopodophyta by Andrews (1970); to Sigillariaceae by Jennings (1980); and to Plantae by Tidwell et al. (1992).
