Cyperites was named by Lindley and Hutton (1832). It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Cyperites bicarinata.

It was assigned to Cyperaceae by Ettinghausen (1880); to Lycopodophyta by Andrews (1970); and to Plantae by Tidwell et al. (1992).
