Tongoboryceras was named by Housa (1967) [Sepkoski's age data: K Coni]. Its type is Lewesiceras tongoboryense.

It was assigned to Pachydiscidae by Wright (1979), Kennedy (1984), Kennedy (1995), Wright et al. (1996) and Arkadiev et al. (2000).
