Anurognathus was named by Döderlein (1923). Its type is Anurognathus ammoni.
It was assigned to Anurognathinae by Nopcsa (1928); to Pterodactylidae by Charig (1967); to Pterosauria by Headden and Campos (2014); to Monofenestrata by Andres et al. (2014); and to Anurognathidae by Unwin (2003), Andres et al. (2010), Lu et al. (2015) and Hone (2020).
