Yuknessia was named by Walcott (1919). It is not extant. Its type is Yuknessia simplex.

It was assigned to Chlorophyceae by Andrews (1970); to Plantae by Conway Morris and Robison (1988); and to Chlorophyta by Briggs et al. (1994).
