Pinctada was named by Ršding (1798) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Pteria (Pinctada) by Grant and IV and Gale (1931).

It was assigned to Pteria by Grant and IV and Gale (1931); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pteriidae by Vokes (1980), Moore (1983), Lamprell and Healy (1998), Spencer et al. (2004) and Rosenberg (2005).
