Litargosuchus was named by Clark and Sues (2002). It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011).

It was assigned to Sphenosuchidae by Clark and Sues (2002); to Crocodilomorphi by Nesbitt (2011); and to Crocodylomorpha by Irmis et al. (2013).
