Gafrarium was named by Ršding (1798) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Corbis (Gafrarium) by Heilprin (1879).

It was assigned to Corbis by Heilprin (1879); to Circinae by Vokes (1980); to Veneridae by Lamprell and Whitehead (1992); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gafrariidae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
