Canellales was named by Cronquist (1957). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (2016).

It was assigned to Magnoliidae by Taylor et al. (2008) and Jud (2011); and to Magnoliids by The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (2016).
